JIM'S BIO

IMG_3036.jpg

Jim McCutchon grew up in New Orleans. He is a fifth generation New Orleanian, but when he had completed his schooling and his postgraduate training in 1958, he decided to move to Corpus Christi, Texas, to open a solo practice of Urology. Ironically, his first wife, Jeanne Ferris McCutchon, who grew up in Corpus Christi, wanted to stay in New Orleans. Jim describes his decision as testosterone poisoned. He wanted to be his own man, and he wanted to prove himself as he had never done anything but school and training. Making a reputation and building a practice were a struggle for him, but even more a struggle for Jeanne. At the time of the move, she had three children and a newborn baby. She never complained to the time of her death in 1998.

Jim did build a solo practice, and Jeanne was able to move into a house big enough for her family in 1965. There were eight children by then. No, there weren’t any more.

Jim also built a reputation as a caring and competent physician who seemed to become president of any organization he joined. Among those were the staff of his preferred hospital, his local medical society and the Texas Urological Society. Jim was a founder of a physician owned HMO and its President and Chairman of the Board for nine of the ten years of its existence before he personally negotiated its sale for a premium. It tells about his values system that he received the same sale bonus as the other stock holders. He was also a leader in various Catholic organizations. His explanation for all of these offices, “I talk too much and offer too many suggestions.”

After Jim retired in 2007, he volunteered as a kitchen helper at a local homeless shelter and kept busy with tennis, gardening and DIY home projects. He is now 92 years old and embarking on a new project, publishing his first novel.
